EAK : Ee Adutha Kalathu Malayalam Movie Reloaded

Ok, so is Malayalam cinema regaining its past glory?. Look no further than Ee Adutha Kalathu; and mean it literally. This movie directed by Arun Kumar of Cocktail fame is a bold and genre bending attempt where story and screenplay rules. A movie sans stars and their starry tantrums EAK takes the new breed of Malayalam movies which more or less started with Traffic forward.

EAK tells the story of networked life in a city. How chance or destiny links men and women together; their lives, struggles and vicissitudes. Casting has been exemplary. Indrajith Sukumaran as Vishnu the rag picker-toy maker or Murali Gopi ,who also is the scenarist, as the petulant CEO (there is more to this character.. :P) or Tanushri Ghosh the Bengali diva as his wife , all have been spot on.Anoop Menon as city police commissioner enacts some lighter moments and again is a refreshingly different character.

The amazing thing about the movie is that it breaks free from the stereotypes that had crept into Malayalam movies of late. This one reminds one of the Padmarajan, Bharathan era where characters where bold and daring at the society; put simply, expose and reveal some of the taboo subjects- unlike the mallu way of things.

The screenplay by Murali Gopy is amazing. The son of ace thespian late Bharath Gopy, Murali has penned a story that has a raw and earthy touch to it (whatever it means: P). His journalistic background has certainly helped. The story is based on the today of cities of Kerala, be it Kochi, Calicut or Trivandrum where it has been shot and more or less placed. So the garbage dump yard on the outskirts of city, a migrant North Indian labor all are part of the story.

"Life is like a Rubik's cube, which has 43,252,003,274,489,856,000 possible configurations. There are countless numbers of wrong twists and turns, but when you get it right, it looks perfect no matter what way you look at it." This is the tagline and epitomizes the quintessentially amazing EAK.

A must watch folks, hit the nearest movie house today itself.

'Dhanush' The Desi Boy Versus 'STR' The International

A few months ago the whole world was in the grip of Kolaveri fever spread by the inimitable Dhanush. Last year was a good one for Dhanush winning the national award, and rising into the national limelight with Kolaveri.

Within a week of the official release of Why this Kolaveri di video, it received more than 3.5 million views on YouTube. No one would have thought this video will be such a huge hit. On the other hand Dhanush's rival Silambarasan aka STR tried to prove that he is no less than Dhanush. Then STR comes with an 'Love Anthem For World Peace' with an international sound and vibe and also created(/tried to create) waves in youtube. Still only the first version has been released and STR Ft Akon's version is yet to be released and the expectations are high from the album.

Before the release of STR Ft Akon's Love Anthem For World Peace, Dhanush comes with an anthem for Sachin. Till now no such album has been created in the name of master blaster Sachin, this will be a treat for all his fans and also for Kolaveri fame Dhanush's fans. As Dhanush himself says in his latest Anthem for Sachin his genre of music Desi or Dappankuthu in south indian lingo. STR on the other hand has attempted to give a rap and jazz kind of feel to his music.

The rivalry is here to continue. All we can say is bring it on guys. We are waiting to listen and watch and enjoy of course.

Mammootty's Son Dulquar Salman's debut movie Second Show:Review

"Second Show" now showing house full almost entirely of fresh faces, the movie certainly has a fresh feel though there is nothing quite new in the story.
Second Show tells the tale of a small time goon growing up into a mafia Kingman, supported by his friends and partners in crime. The movie cannot claim to be perfect, however with no experienced biggies in the mainstay that can be excused.

The freshness in style and faces is what sets the movie rolling. Mammootty’s son Dulquar Salman shows us that he does have something to offer to the Malayalam film industry. There are times when we feel it is that young Mammootty on the screen ahead of us. He commands the screen very well and there is some spark in him that draws us to him. Though a short role, the female lead Gauthami Nair also promises to be an important addition to the industry. Another highlight among the newcomers is Sunny Wayne as Kurudi. His idiotic statements and stances in the movie complement the mature and stable person that Dulquer portrays.

The experienced players in the movie comprise of Rohini, Baburaj, Kunjan and Bollywood actor Sudesh Berry. Although they do not take up much screen time, they fill the gaps the youngsters leave. All in all, do not expect highly of the movie. Consider it an experiment and you’ll be more than satisfied.
